A Legacy of Memories: The Outdoor Chapel

Argyle Lake State Park was one of our first adventures as a family. It became an even more memberable location when we got married here in 2017! The outdoor chapel is one of the park’s most unique features. Set against the backdrop of the massive oaks and hickories, it’s a serene spot that many visitors miss. It’s lovely to think that every time we go back to hike or fish, we are walking through the same landscape where we said our vows.

A "Fisherman’s Delight"

The park is famous for its 93-acre lake, and the fishing is top-tier. The lake is stocked with a variety of species, including largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. For the more ambitious, it also holds tiger muskie and is stocked with rainbow trout in the spring and fall. Like many Illinois state parks in 2026, Argyle continues to be a go-to spot for accessible fishing. Just remember that while the park entrance is free, a valid Illinois fishing license is still a must for the adults!

Trails for Every Pace

Argyle’s trail system is surprisingly rugged for the Midwest. There are about 5 miles of foot trails. If the kids have high energy, the Shore Trail is a great one because you can hunt for beaver dams along the water's edge. For something more moderate, the Blackberry Trail offers great views without being too strenuous. For those with horses or mountain bikes, there is a separate rugged 7-mile trail that really lets you see the deeper, 1,700-acre "wild" side of the park.

Hunting & Conservation

For those interested in the hunting permits, Argyle is a managed site for upland game, deer (archery and firearm), and turkey. Hunters now use a "windshield card" system through the IDNR website. This helps the park rangers track wildlife populations and ensure the forest stays healthy for everyone!
