A Soda Lover's Paradise: The Hitching Post

Walking through the doors of The Hitching Post is like stepping into a time machine. The air smells like woodsmoke and homemade fudge, and every inch of the walls is covered in vintage signs, classic toys, and Kentucky souvenirs.

The Wall of 170+ Sodas

The absolute highlight for our family was the soda selection. We had never seen anything like it! They stock over 170 varieties of glass-bottled sodas, ranging from the classics we grew up with to some truly "peculiar" flavors.

We spent a good amount of time just browsing the shelves, laughing at the names and trying to decide which ones to take with us.

• The Kentucky Classics: Of course, you can't stop in Kentucky without seeing Ale-8-One, the state's famous ginger and citrus soda.

• The "Gross-out" Flavors: The kids were particularly fascinated (and a little grossed out) by the "Totally Gross" line, with names like Dog Drool and Zombie Brain Juice.

• Nostalgic Picks: For Mom and Dad, it was all about finding the rare root beers and cream sodas that you just can't find in a regular grocery store.

We learned that if you visit on a Sunday between May and August, they even host a "Sunday Soda Showdown," where you can do a tasting and learn trivia about different bottlers. Even without the tasting, just picking out a cold bottle from the vintage coolers was a highlight of the afternoon.

More Than Just Pop

While the soda was the star, we couldn't leave without checking out the rest of the store. The homemade fudge is famous for a reason (it's incredible), and the kids loved looking through the old-fashioned candy bins and classic wooden toys. It’s a "boutique" country store experience, everything is high quality, and the staff makes you feel like a local the moment you walk in.

A Perfect Family Detour

The Hitching Post is exactly the kind of place that makes a road trip special. It’s small, it’s friendly, and it gave us a chance to stretch our legs and satisfy our sweet tooth all at once. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best memories aren't at the "big" destinations, but at the little country stores along the way.
