The Gateway to the "Between the Rivers"

The Golden Pond Visitor Center is more than just a place to grab a map. We spent time in the museum area learning about the unique heritage of the people who once lived "between the rivers" (the Tennessee and the Cumberland). It was a great way to put the landscape into perspective before we headed out to explore it. The gift shop was also a hit, filled with nature-themed gear and local Kentucky crafts.

Two Ways to See the Stars

This area is a dream for anyone who loves looking up. We took advantage of two very different "space" experiences right near the visitor center. The Golden Pond Planetarium is cool and dark, 40-foot domed theater. The 4K digital projection was stunning, it felt like we were actually flying through the rings of Saturn. It’s a NASA Educator Resource Center, so the info was top-notch, but they also have fun laser light shows set to music that the kids absolutely loved. It was the perfect midday break from the Kentucky sun. The "Drive-Through" Prairie (Our Bison Planetarium) is just two minutes north at the Elk & Bison Prairie. We drove the 3.5-mile paved loop through the restored native grassland. It was incredible to see massive American Bison and herds of Elk wandering so close to the van. Just like looking at constellations, you have to scan the horizon to spot them! We learned that the best times to see them are early morning or late evening, and seeing those huge animals against the tall prairie grass felt like looking back in time to what Kentucky looked like hundreds of years ago.

A Natural Sanctuary

Land Between the Lakes reminded us how much we love the variety of the American landscape. One minute we were learning about galaxies, and the next we were waiting for a 2,000-pound bison to cross the road. It’s a place that manages to be both peaceful and incredibly exciting all at once.
