A Day at the St. Louis Zoo: Penguins, Rays, and Early Birds
Our family strategy for the St. Louis Zoo is simple: get there early. We love pulling into Forest Park just as the sun is getting high, securing a prime parking spot before the crowds arrive. Whether we choose the convenience of the paid lots or find a perfect spot along the winding roads of Forest Park, being there at opening makes the whole day feel more relaxed.
Walk-Through Wonders
The Penguin & Puffin Coast is always our first must-see stop. It’s one of the coolest (literally!) exhibits we’ve ever been in. Walking through the "Penguin Cove" with no glass between us and the birds is incredible. We love watching the Gentoos and Rockhoppers waddle past and hearing the unique calls of the King penguins. It feels less like an exhibit and more like we’ve stepped onto a rocky sub-Antarctic coastline. From there, we always head toward Sea Lion Sound. Walking through the 35-foot underwater tunnel while the sea lions zip over our heads like torpedoes is a family favorite. Their grace in the water is a total contrast to how goofy they look sunning themselves on the rocks above!
The Adventure Pass Tradition
While admission is free, we always make sure to get tickets for the "extra" experiences that make the day special. We have a set routine:
The Zooline Railroad: We love taking the train to get a narrated tour of the park and to save our legs for more exploring.
Stingrays at Caribbean Cove: There is nothing like the silky feel of a stingray gliding under your hand. We love the "splash zone" energy of the pool and seeing the cownose rays pop their heads up.
The Conservation Carousel: A classic way to end the loop, with the kids picking their favorite hand-carved animal to ride.
Picnic with the Flamingos
One of our favorite traditions is bringing our own lunch. The zoo is very family-friendly about outside food, and we have the perfect spot: right by the flamingos. Sitting there with our sandwiches while watching the bright pink birds filter-feed and stand on one leg is the best "dinner theater" in town. It’s a peaceful break in the middle of a busy day.
A Saint Louis Treasure
Leaving the zoo, we always feel so lucky to have such an incredible resource nearby. It’s easy to get to, beautifully maintained, and filled with memories for our family. Every time we see those flamingos or hear the train whistle, we’re already planning our next trip back.
