Automotive Alchemy: Our Visit to Carhenge

As we traveled through the high plains of Western Nebraska, we made a stop at what is arguably the state’s most famous (and strangest) roadside attraction: Carhenge. Carhenge is located in Alliance, Nebraska. It sits right in the heart of the "Panhandle," not far from where we saw Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock. Standing in the middle of a vast prairie, seeing a full-scale replica of England’s Stonehenge built entirely out of vintage cars is a surreal sight. We learned that it was created in 1987 by a man named Jim Reinders. He had lived in England and studied the original Stonehenge, but he wanted to build a version back home as a memorial to his father.

With the help of about 35 family members during a reunion, they hauled in 38 vintage American automobiles, including a 1962 Plymouth Valiant and a 1951 Willys Jeep, and arranged them in a 96-foot circle. They even painted them all battleship gray to mimic the look of the ancient standing stones.

More Than Just a Circle

While the "Henge" itself is the main draw, the kids loved exploring the Car Art Reserve on the rest of the property. There are several other sculptures made from car parts, including a giant spawning salmon and a metallic dinosaur. It’s like a playground for anyone who loves quirky art and classic engineering. It was a blast to walk around the site and see how the cars were buried trunk-first into the ground or welded together to form the massive "lintels" (the horizontal stones). It’s a place that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet you can feel the dedication and family history that went into every weld.

A Roadside Masterpiece

Carhenge was the perfect addition to our trip through the Nebraska Panhandle. It’s quirky, it’s free, and it’s a total testament to American creativity. Seeing it standing tall against the wide-open Nebraska sky was a moment we won't soon forget, and it definitely made for some of the most unique photos of our entire summer.
