Our Adventure at the Henry Doorly Zoo

Our recent family trip to Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we walked through the gates, it was clear why this destination is world-renowned. It’s a massive, immersive world that manages to bring the furthest corners of the globe right to the Midwest.

Into the Wild: The Lied Jungle

One of the absolute highlights of our day was the Lied Jungle. Stepping inside, we were immediately transported from Nebraska to a tropical rainforest. The sheer scale of the building is mind-blowing, it’s one of the largest indoor rainforests in the world. We wandered through the humid, lush canopy, listening to the roar of waterfalls and spotting gibbons swinging through the trees. It felt like a true expedition.

Unforgettable Animal Encounters

The zoo is packed with "wow" moments, but two experiences stood out for our family. There is nothing quite like looking a giraffe in the eye. Standing on the elevated platform at the African Grasslands, we got to hand-feed these gentle giants. Watching those long, purple tongues reach out for a snack was a memory we won't soon forget! We spent a significant amount of time at the elephant habitat. Seeing the massive herd, especially the younger ones, interacting and moving together was incredibly moving. The exhibit is designed to give them so much space to roam, making the viewing experience feel very natural and respectful.

A World Under One Roof (and Several Domes)

Beyond the jungle and the grasslands, the zoo offered endless variety:

• The Desert Dome: We explored the world’s largest indoor desert under that iconic glazed geodesic dome.

• The Scott Aquarium: Walking through the shark tunnel, with rays and sharks gliding right over our heads, was breathtaking.

• Asian Highlands: A beautiful trek where we saw red pandas and snow leopards in a stunningly designed landscape.

Why It Was the Perfect Family Trip

What makes Henry Doorly so special is that it’s designed for discovery at every age. Whether we were riding the tram to catch a breeze, exploring the massive splash pads and playgrounds, or just sitting back to watch the gorillas, there was never a dull moment. It wasn't just a day at the zoo; it was a day of wonder that brought our family closer together.
