Cahokia Mounds
Cahokia Mounds is the largest pre-Columbian site north of Mexico and was once the largest city in the world! Articfacts from this culture have been found as far north as Canada and south as the Mississippi. If those facts alone don't peak your interest, maybe the challenge of climbing 156 steps to the top of Monk's Mound will! The mound is roughly 14 acres and 100 feet high. You can go on tours, but we personally enjoyed exploring on our own! The mounds are roughly 30-45 minutes from St. Louis, which has many other high interest locations. If you look to the west while on top of Monk's Mound, you can see Cahokia Mound's version of Stonehenge (Woodhenge) created out of wood. Southwest you will actually see the Gateway Arch. This is a quick stop, close to the city that you should definitely add to your list!
