Beauty and the Storm: Our Escape from the Badlands

Near the very end of our Summer 2024 Road Trip, we made a detour to Badlands National Park. We intended to spend the afternoon exploring the alien landscape of layered rock formations and mixed-grass prairies, but nature had other plans.

The Calm Before The Storm

For a brief window, we got to witness the park’s famous beauty. The views were spectacular, endless ridges of striated rock in bands of rust, cream, and gray rising sharply from the flat plains. It felt like walking on the moon. We managed to snap a few photos of the jagged buttes, marveling at how different this terrain was from the mountains of Wyoming we had just left.

The Sky Turns Dark

However, the open prairie is famous for its volatile weather, and things changed fast. Dark, bruising clouds began to roll in, and the wind picked up significantly. While visiting the visiotrs center a park ranger gave us some serious advice: lightning was incoming, and with the exposed nature of the overlooks, it was not a good time start any hikes.

The Drive Out

We packed up and headed for the exit, but the storm caught us. It wasn't just rain; it was a torrential downpour accompanied by fierce winds that shook the vehicle. Visibility dropped to near zero. It became too dangerous to keep driving, so we were forced to pull over into various parking lots along the loop road to wait out the worst gusts. Huddled inside the campervan while the storm raged outside, watching the water pour over the windshield, was intense. Smaller cars were parking right next to us, to use us as a barrier for the heavy gusts of winds. 

A Powerful Memory

While our visit was cut short, it was easily one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. Seeing the Badlands under the grip of a massive thunderstorm highlighted the raw, dangerous beauty of the landscape. We didn't get to hike as planned, but we certainly got an adventure.
